Over the course of the last two weeks, Americans have been rocked by two tragic, mass shootings. The first took place on May 14 in Buffalo, New York at a Tops Market, killing 10 people. The next shooting took place on May 24th at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. Nineteen children and two teachers were killed. Our hearts break for the families that have lost children and loved ones in Uvalde, and for those that have lost their loved ones in the racially motivated attack in Buffalo.
To support those impacted by these mass shootings, we’ve compiled a list of nonprofit organizations you can support and charity vetting tools you can utilize to ensure your support reaches those most in need.
Verifying where your support goes
Supporting nonprofits and different funds in the wake of these mass shootings can have a positive impact on the families and communities impacted. However, you should take the time to ensure your support goes to legitimate relief organizations. Verify that the nonprofit you’re giving to is legitimate and trustworthy by searching for them on sites like Charity Navigator, GuideStar, or TEOS (tax-exempt organization search).
